Not illustrated. 1901 Excerpt: ...of loving loyalty than those of Ruth to her mother-in-law: "Entreat me not to leave thee or to turn back from following after thee, for whither thou goest I will go, where thou lodgest I will lodge; thy people shall be my people, thy God my God. Where thou diest I will die and there will I be buried." It is strikingly significant that the Bible devotes an entire book to that beautiful illustration of the affectionate relation which should exist between the wife and her motherin-law. For many ages it was the general custom for the bride to go, not to a home of her own, but to the home of her husband's parents; such is the custom yet in some countries, notably in China and Japan. There the husband's parents took the place of the wife's and she rendered unto them the respect and obedience formerly due her own. And as Ruth was richly rewarded for her devotion to her motherin-law, so it is fair to assume that no modern Ruth will ever be without reward. In the case of the husband's mother-in-law there seems to be no substantial evidence of divine origin (laughter); it is true the Bible speaks of her once, and I believe only once. It is there related that Peter's wife's mother lay sick of a fever and that Christ was called in and rebuked the fever and it left her. This case is generally cited in supPROCEEDINGS. port of the contention that Christ sympathizes with a man's mother-in-law (laughter), but it must be remembered that He sympathizes with all sinners. (Laughter.) Besides, it is significant that although He made no noise about this cure He had effected, the people learned of it and not long after He was crucified.
